Midsommar, Freeride 178

The winter season was over in most part of Sweden, I haven’t been standing on skis since the middle of May at the “Scandinavian Big Mountain Championship” I was missing it as hell!

It was in the middle of June I have been working for 2 weeks but now its weekend, not an ordinary weekend it was midsummer and a lot of people had gathered in Riksgränsen Sweden for the traditional Midsummer skiing, the snow was slushy and it was super hot in the sun, a perfect ending of the season

I started the day with mounting my new freeride 178 skis and taking my smelly boots on, then I walk to the chair lift that took me up to the ski area, electricity was in the air.

As I took my first turns I felt a little unused to the skis but after the first run I took them out to the backcountry, next to the rocks, drops and all the mud, the skis felt perfect for those conditions, easy handled next to rocks during drops, and stable in higher speed after drops,

Rock ON!

Facts: Height 185, Weight: 85 kg, started skiing at age 3, over 150 ski days per year.

Signs of bear!

The door is fixed the next day but there are still traces of bear...!
Phil who we're staying with said it was probabley quite a big brown bear.
On our way to the slope
End of season...

Art on the mountain..!

Season's soon over

Hi there!!!

No the season is really coming to an end... the Whistler mountain is closed and Backcomb is "open" although someone made biking paths in the snow on the mountain. Looks like pisten bullies-wide serpentine roads everywhere... The Telus festival is over after two weeks of March invasion by people and a lot of work. Now everything just feels empty. Some locals and seasoners still hanging around in the bars and cafés, and bears are now waking up out there. Better be careful now... I was waiting for the bus two days ago when a bear who just woke up from its winter sleep appearing a bit hungry showed up. He more or less walked through the steel door in to a garbage room and eat some things in there. Later in the evening when we dared to move closer we saw that he had damaged the door and that he had left traces of his feet everywhere on the door (see photos!)

We have seen SUNSHINE for two whole days, unbeleiveable! So now we are hoping for just another day of sun, we have only one week to go so now is the time. Hope to see a bear or two as well but hopefully on a safe distance. I'll write soon again, bye.....

Mmmm.....

mmm..
The whole jump...!!

My winter

This winter started off really great, snow early, good positions in competitions, lots of new tricks and many trips.

I've met lots of new people and really had fun.

It's also been great to use the Nocopy wear and some other "cool" sponsor gear.

Everything has been perfect in other words!

When everything was really going great of course that thing happened which should not happen, I injured my knee.
Many weeks of resting and no skiing.

That feeling I got the first day I could stand on my skis again, not jump, not going fast but still being with my skiing friends again was really great.

When there is no pressure being the number one, just some soft riding... it's really a great feeling and everything always goes better when there is no pressure.

I finished the season yesterday by travelling to the Åre in Sweden over the weekend to get some real skiing again. Now I've got the whole summer to recover again, maybe I'll go for some summer skiing and of course water jumping down in Orsa!!:)

Whistler - the continuation

Life goes on in Whistler.... soon the Tellus festival starts, one of the worlds´biggest outdoor and free festivals. People have started to come in and the atmosphere and the expectations are increasing dy by day. Checked out the qualifying for the festival, this will most certainly be a competition worth attending. But one thing's missing... the SUN... where is the thing?! it'g incredible, I've never been to a less sunny place than this, except for Sweden last summer =)... hoping for improvment in the end of my stay here how my memories from here will probably be sunny.... maybe!!

If you're dying to know about my back I can tell you it's OK, have been doing some soft skiing.... but can't wait to start jumping again... Have to focus on summer skiing in Folgefonna or the water jumping in Orsa, Sweden;) will take some more photos tomorrow evening so you can follow the Whistler Tellus festival.....

Not quite what I imagined !!!!!

Hi there Swedes and others!
Sometimes things are just not going your way, especially not when you "break" your back as they said in the hospital. A rather snowy day with only medium good visibility you should be careful in the park if this is where you're spending most of your time, especially if it has been snowing and it's difficult to judge the speed too. We started of quite carefully to warm up as usual and then we went over to the greater jumps that were open in Blackcomb. A bit difficult with the speed but still we wanted to do the tricks we have trained for, went well until a bit further down the slope.
I landed backwards after having made a 540 degrees´spin, taking a nice tailgrab. First on the skies but then I couldn't hold back and fell on my arse, laid there gasping for breath trying to find out what really happened. Felt quite OK at that time and people were asking did I survive the crash. Stood up on my skis and headed for the lift near the park. Then I started
realising... no wheel chair, had to go by sledge downhill, ambulance jeep, got a neck support and then a wheel chair.

After some time in the hospital, xray and many questions and a waiting friend Jocke the doctor showed me the xray plates. Told me I should be greatful that I did'nt have to travel by wheel chair home to Sweden and laughed. Said that Tanner Hall did the same thing + another 30 pro skiers who are totally recovered by now. OK I thought, got my crutches, the perscription and the bill of 1100 USD... I tell you, it was worth every penny to know what had happened.... life's great... sometimes you have that little guardian angel on your shoulder, hope he stays there for another while and that the rehabilitation goes well so I get a chance to do some more skiing before getting on the plane this season.... mmmm

that's what a day in Whistler may be like .... more reports and photos will come. Hopefully with shorter interval. Have converted in to being a photographer the coming 3 weeks.
Have a great time and write in this blog/andreas

Hawaii

aloha!!!

get's a bit too much of snow sometimes so why not take a ride to the warmer places on the earth...=)

whistler

Hi skiing freaks!!!

Sitting in Whistler now and can soon recommend this place.... here you find all kind of skiing for everyone. But the mountain is a bit sensitive to fog but you tend to forget that when you're facing a clear blue sky and 50 centimeter of new snow. Ciao.
